Construction Beauty Queen

She's on the job...and out of his league.

Chicago socialite Veronica Jamison is determined to shake off her sheltered lifestyle and overbearing parents. She heads to her grandfather’s small town of Kortville, ready to roll up her sleeves and work for the family construction business. She’ll prove her worth, even if it means answering to the company’s ruggedly handsome co-owner, Matt.

Matt Shaw just wants to run his business, spend time with the niece he’s raising on his own, and give back to the townspeople who have stood by him. Managing a spoiled-rotten princess he knows he’ll never be good enough for? Not part of his plan. But as he gets to know Veronica, he learns there’s more to her than her beautiful looks and designer clothes. She’s got a heart as rich as her background.

With the quirky townspeople rallying against Veronica inheriting her grandfather’s business, it’s up to Matt to try to drive her out of town. But how can he, when instead she’s driving her way into his heart?

Love Him or Leave Him

Sometimes dreams are where you least expect them

Connor O’Malley and Becca Sanders were once high school sweethearts, ripped apart by rumors in the small town of Kortville, Illinois. Connor left to join the military, and Becca stayed, waiting for her younger brother to graduate so she could live her dreams of traveling the world. But now that Connor's back as the town sheriff, Becca finds herself struggling to resist the too-handsome man who once broke her heart.

Connor loves Kortville—its quaintness keeps at bay the painful memories of Afghanistan he’s sure make him unworthy of any woman, particularly the beautiful brunette he’s always secretly dreamed of a future with. But when a scandal rocks the town, suddenly Connor and Becca must trust in each other if they want to weather this storm…and come out on the other side of it together.

Tuesday Toolbox - Twitter Party #BlissBall August 7th, 9-10pm EST #giveaway

As every writer who intends to write for more than an audience of one soon discovers, you can't just write a great book. You have to promote it too.

Luckily, promotion can be fun. It can even be a PARTY with other awesome authors who write the same time of books as you. Which means readers come to party because they're a fan of one author, discover you, and might just fall in love with the books you write too.

In the midst of this glorious exposure, you and your soon-to-be readers are having fun chatting up the Twitter-sphere, and your readers are winning cool swag that they'll love and remember the awesome author who gave it to them. It's a win-win plan for readers and authors alike.

Iif you'd like to check out a Twitter party with cool giveaway prizes (including those cool antique bronze "live your dream" charms pictured above), join the sweet and sassy authors of Entangled Bliss on Twitter on August 7th from 9-10pm EST. Use the hashtag #BlissBall, and you'll be entered for our random giveaways.

Tuesday Toolbox – Pinterest for Authors

I resisted joining Pinterest when it first broke onto the scene. I’m a word person, not a picture person. But promotion is about connecting with readers in their comfort zone and where they’re receptive to you. I also couldn’t ignore all those “Pin It” icons that were showing up everywhere, making it easy to add a pin to my boards.

At first I just pinned my book covers and covers from other authors I love, along with some outdoor pictures that I found inspiring. But then I realized that I could do more.

I have lots of ideas in my head of what my characters, their settings, and important objects look like, but descriptive writing is not my strength. Pinterest gives me a place where I can show readers a really good visual by repinning other people’s pins, and hopefully the people I repin from might be inclined to check me out. Maybe they’ll even be intrigued by what they see or remember my name.

I’m currently developing a couple multi-book series, and I’ve discovered Pinterest is a wonderful tool for connecting these books, both in my creative mind and for readers. For each series, I created a Pinterest board for all the books and characters in the series to mingle together.

For example, on my “Small Town, Big Dreams” Series board, I have the two pictures you see here. I also have pictures of Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon to represent Matt and Veronica from Construction Beauty Queen. I also found an awesome Halloween costume of a construction couple. In addition, I’ve posted some pictures that tie in to my upcoming release Love Him or Leave Him. Surprisingly, the pins of an abandoned bowling alley that I posted are quickly becoming my most repinned items. I’m catching the attention of people I never would have connected with otherwise.

Take a peek at my Pinterest boards. I’d love to hear which pins are your favorites, what you’d like to see added and how you think I could make my boards even better.

#TuesdayTeaser - Construction Beauty Queen

Note: I'm making a bit of a change to my blog. Effective immediately, the Tuesday Toolbox feature will now run every other Tuesday with a Tuesday Teaser running on the alternate Tuesdays.

This week's teaser comes from my sweet, contemporary romance novel Construction Beauty Queen, book one in the Small Town, Big Dreams series, published by Entangled Bliss.

"You left your tools behind," Veronica noted as Matt backed out of the driveway. "We didn't finish hanging the gate, and I really wanted to meet the owner of that house."

"I'll come back and finish up. The job's almost done."

"So I'm your top priority." She leaned her forehead against the window. "That's so sweet."

His chest tightened, but he kept his voice impassive. "You have a warped idea of top priority if you think someone who makes you beat yourself up with tools and then pass out is sweet."

She lifted her head enough to smile weakly at him. "Matt Shaw, you are without a doubt the sweetest boss I've ever had."

His fingers twitched. He clenched the steering wheel, but it was a poor substitute for the skin he longed to touch. "You're only saying that because I haven't fired you yet."

Tuesday Toolbox - Book Giveaways, Part 1

Today, I want to talk about a tool for authors after you've published a book (or ideally more than one book): book giveaways. Who doesn't love a free book, right?

There are several different avenues for book giveaways:

Goodreads: If you have a new or upcoming PRINT release, you can do a giveaway on Goodreads. You choose what countries you’re willing to ship to and how many books you want to give away. Be aware that you’re responsible for shipping costs to the winner. They also give you the code to put a widget for the giveaway on your website or blog. I've been doing a giveaway of one of my promotional print copies of Construction Beauty Queen. Over 250 potential readers have seen my book cover, seen my name, and taken the time to sign up. I think of it as an ad to gain exposure of my name and my books.

E-book giveaways: The great thing about giving away a copy of an ebook is you send it through cyberspace, so there’s no shipping cost. If you’re self-published or if your publisher gives you author copies for giveaways, then it doesn't cost you anything. Now that I have multiple books, I can promote a new book and give away a copy of an older title. Below are a couple ways of setting up an e-book giveaway.
  • Blog hops: I participate in blog hops, where I post on my own blog and use e-books as my giveaway prize. I usually pick my winner from a random commenter. You can look back over my posts for the past couple weeks and notice that I've participated in two different themed blog hops.
  • Blog tours: Similar to blog hops, I use e-books as my giveaway prize, but I reach readers through guest blogging on other blogs through an organized tour. The prize is awarded at the end of the entire tour instead of each separate prize for each blog. Rafflecopter is an excellent tour for picking a random winner. You can see my blog tour for Psychic Lies that’s going on now. Feel free to enter the giveaway too!

I’ll discuss one more book giveaway tools in next week’s Tuesday Toolbox.

Sensational Secondary Characters Blog Hop

I am thrilled to participate in this blog hop because I LOVE secondary characters, especially those quirky, funny characters who "help" the hero and heroine on their journey to happily-ever-after. At least in my case, these characters, who usually have good intentions, complicate the hero and heroine's journeys, testing their mettle and ultimately making them grow into stronger, better people that we want to cheer for.

My new release Construction Beauty Queen is filled with quirky secondary characters who have a common goal--to drive my heroine out of town.  Barney from the convenience store tries to accomplish this by offering Veronica one of his trademark (inedible) welcome gifts.  "Nonsense," he tells her when she attempts to graciously decline. "You're malnourished. You need donuts."

The Wiccan Haus series from Musa Publishing is full of quirky continuing characters that populate the island. My favorite happens to be Myron who works the front desk in the Wiccan Haus resort, is continuously wearing the wrong name tag, and receives psychic answers from a seemingly ordinary deck of playing cards. At times she uses these answers to nudge the hero and heroine together, and at other times she deliberately withholds information, forcing them to look inside themselves to figure out the answers.

Two characters who completely stole the show in my book Mr. Forever were the heroine's brilliant, eccentric and insecure sister Penelope and the hero's brother Ethan, a suave lady's man.  I loved their secondary story line so much that I wrote an epilogue to Mr. Forever to show them getting their happily-ever-after. Offered last December as a free holiday read, I will give away a copy of Penelope's Pleasures to everyone who leaves a comment telling me their favorite secondary character and what book (or movie or TV show) he or she is from. Please indicate your preferred e-book format (Kindle, Nook or pdf) and include an email address for me to send to.

Construction Beauty Queen Release Day

These past two months I have been editing like a mad woman (if, indeed, mad women edit!), and I can now show the proof that I've been working my, ur, "butt joints" off. (Yeah, you'll have to read the book to get that reference.)

I am now officially an Entangled author with the brand new Bliss Imprint that launched last month with Sugar Rush by Rachel Astor, Lucky Break by Kelly Vitollo and Three River Ranch by Roxanne Snopek.
