I fell in love with the Wiccan Haus in November of 2011 and immediately dove in to writing a draft of what would become A Man Worth Fighting For, which was published in March 2012. I loved this story and believed in it from the beginning. Although I was sad to see it taken off the market when Musa Publishing closed its doors earlier this year, I knew I was a better writer than I was three years ago, so I was excited for the chance to revisit Holly and Justin and revise the writing while keeping with the same story.

The unmistakable crack of a rifle split the air. A bullet breezed by Justin’s shoulder and embedded in the tree behind him. He reached into his waistband for his gun and realized he was unarmed. Shit!

Her eyes widened in panic, but she nodded.

Shit. If this was anything more than a hunter’s bullet gone awry, the killer wasn’t going to leave a witness when he took out Justin. Holly was in just as much danger as he was. Lying on the ground, they were protected by a large boulder between them and the direction of the fire. Of course, luck probably didn’t have anything to do with it. The killer had likely chosen it, so they wouldn’t spot him until it was too late.

He slowly lifted his body off Holly. “Don’t move, no matter what happens. Understand?”

Her eyes widened, looking more horrified, but she nodded again. Damn it. This is why he didn’t want her anywhere near him. Because of him, she was in danger.

I am so excited to write for the Wiccan Haus series. A Man Worth Fight For was my first foray into a paranormal world, and I loved it. All the world building has been figured out for me. The cast of continuing characters are quirky and well-loved that readers feel like they are visiting an old friend, and I get to visit them when I read Wiccan Haus books by other authors.

For me writing a multi-author series is the best of both worlds. I have a great author community that's as invested in this world as much as I am, and I get to focus on what I do best--writing romance, emotion and bringing my characters to the happily ever after they so desperately need.

“How did you hurt your knee?” Holly asked.

“Occupational hazard,” Justin muttered.

That wasn’t very comforting, considering he was in the military and always going off on missions that he couldn’t give her any details about. “Did you fall and break it?”

“Bullet shattered it.” His words were clipped.

She flinched, wanting desperately to reach for him, hating to think of the pain he’d been in, the pain she’d known nothing about. “And how long before or after this happened did you send me an eight word break-up text?”

“About seventy-two hours after.”

She immediately knew she’d been right not to take his text at face value. The self-destruction of a client and the week of lost work were worth it. She’d needed this explanation. More than that, it proved there was still hope for them. “So you conceivably could have still been under the effects of anesthesia.”

“I wasn’t.”

“But you were on pain medication for sure.”

“Don’t make excuses for me. I was an ass. I broke up with you, and you deserve better.”

Tuesday Toolbox - Character Names

I can brainstorm an entire story using words like hero, heroine, hero’s best friend, heroine’s mother, the bad guy, etc. But once I start actually writing, I need names for my characters. And thinking off the top of my head, my brain tends to freeze and come up with nothing.

So, sitting on my desk within arm’s reach, I have The Last Word on Baby Names by Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran and The Baby Name Survey Book: What People Think About Your Baby’s Name by Bruce Lansky and Barry Sinrod. I picked up these particular books years ago when I was pregnant. While they have outlived their purpose in my personal life, they have become a staple in my writing life.

There are no “rules” for naming characters, but over the years I’ve incorporated some guidelines that I hope make for a better reading experience.

The names of the hero and heroine begin with a different letter. If possible, I try to have every character in the book start with a different letter. Although I sometimes have secondary characters with the same beginning letter, I try not to do it too often. Anything I can do to help the reader keep the characters straight translates into a better reading experience and more enjoyment of my books.

Give names a different cadence and length. No to Melanie and Valerie. No to Kate and Nate. No to Max, Sam and Pat. Yes, to Melanie, Kate and Samantha.

In the front of The Baby Name Survey Book, there is a “First Impressions of Girl/Boy Names.” I often use this as a starting point. If my heroine is smart (and what heroine isn’t??), I look at the list of “smart” girl names and see if any of them speak to me.

For last names, I try to follow similar guidelines. I often use this website of common surnames to come up with possibilities.

If you start with a character name and later realize it is less than ideal, “find and replace” is a wonderful word processing feature. When I sold the proposal for A Man Worth Fighting For, the heroine’s name was Cassie. Two-thirds of the way through writing the book I had to change it. Two secondary characters in the Wiccan Haus world already began with a C, and having them both in the same scene with her was too much C for me. A consultation with my baby name reference books and a quick “find and replace all,” and Cassie was reborn as Holly.

One final caveat: “Find and replace” is wonderful for most names, but be careful if you have a character named Matt that you want to change to, say, George. Everywhere you used the word “matter” in your manuscript, it is suddenly going to read “georgeer.”

Happy 1st Anniversary Musa Publishing!

Wow! So much can happen in one year. It certainly has for me, and I know it has for Musa Publishing, as well.  Exactly one year ago Musa opened their doors. About six weeks prior, I started hearing about this new publisher that had signed the amazing bestselling authors Sharon DeVita and Cindi Myers. I went to their website, read their publishing story, submission guidelines and sample contract and decided to submit too.

Within two weeks, I was a Musa author. My first book with them (Mr. Forever) didn't come out until December, but I was a part of the company almost an entire month before the launch. Not only did I witness the excitement firsthand. The directors and other authors made me a part of it because at Musa we really are one big family.

While waiting for my first book to come out for Musa, I sold my first book ever on proposal to them (The Wiccan Haus: A Man Worth Fighting For). When I signed that contract, I knew my publishing dreams had come true, and I was a professional working author.

Throughout the spring and summer, I wrote two short stories for Musa, sold another Wiccan Haus book on proposal and signed with two other publishers. I'm living my dream, and I have the fabulous directors at  Musa Publishing (Celina, Kelly, Kerry and Dominique) to thank for it!

Sensational Secondary Characters Blog Hop

I am thrilled to participate in this blog hop because I LOVE secondary characters, especially those quirky, funny characters who "help" the hero and heroine on their journey to happily-ever-after. At least in my case, these characters, who usually have good intentions, complicate the hero and heroine's journeys, testing their mettle and ultimately making them grow into stronger, better people that we want to cheer for.

My new release Construction Beauty Queen is filled with quirky secondary characters who have a common goal--to drive my heroine out of town.  Barney from the convenience store tries to accomplish this by offering Veronica one of his trademark (inedible) welcome gifts.  "Nonsense," he tells her when she attempts to graciously decline. "You're malnourished. You need donuts."

The Wiccan Haus series from Musa Publishing is full of quirky continuing characters that populate the island. My favorite happens to be Myron who works the front desk in the Wiccan Haus resort, is continuously wearing the wrong name tag, and receives psychic answers from a seemingly ordinary deck of playing cards. At times she uses these answers to nudge the hero and heroine together, and at other times she deliberately withholds information, forcing them to look inside themselves to figure out the answers.

Two characters who completely stole the show in my book Mr. Forever were the heroine's brilliant, eccentric and insecure sister Penelope and the hero's brother Ethan, a suave lady's man.  I loved their secondary story line so much that I wrote an epilogue to Mr. Forever to show them getting their happily-ever-after. Celebrating Independence Blog Hop

I am so lucky to live in a country that allows me the freedom to do what I love. For me that love consists of writing and raising my family in a peaceful town where we can come and go without being afraid for our safety or our freedom.

Thank you to every single United States serviceman and servicewoman -- past, present and future -- who have made my peaceful, joyful life of freedom possible.

In honor of the great men and women who serve our country, I am giving away a copy of A Man Worth Fighting For.
