Wake Me by @AlexaBourne #psychic #romanticsuspense from @DecadentPub

Wake Me by Alexa Bourne

Her psychic dreams come true.

Sarah McKinley’s attempts to take her foreknowledge of crimes to the Seattle Police Department marked her as a troublemaker and were never taken seriously. Starting over in Austin, she plans never to reveal her gift, but shortly after she arrives, the dreams begin again, and the local police want to know why she has knowledge only the killer could possess.

Detective Jesse Cordell watched his mother con people with her “psychic ability” all through his childhood. He hones in on Sarah, who has means, motive, and opportunity to have murdered the victim in his current investigation. Instinct tells him she didn’t commit the crime, but she definitely knows more than she’s letting on.

Can he put aside his doubts and join forces with her, against everything he believes in, to find the real killer? Or will he do his job and put her behind bars? After all, there’s no such thing as the “psychic ability.” Or is there?

Excerpt:
The buzz around her head grew louder as more students joined the crowd. Yellow tape secured the crime scene several yards away, but limbs still stuck over the cement edge of the water fountain.
A guy in plain clothes ducked under the tape and ventured toward them. A gold shield hung from his belt. “Can anybody tell me what happened?”

“She can!” a male voice from behind called out.

Hoping to take attention off herself, Sarah joined the other students in whirling around to see who the guy meant. Several voices rushed toward the man, accosting him with different versions of the crime. Sarah floated through the sea of people, away from the crowd.

For the nine months, she’d lived in Austin, she’d never mentioned a word about her so-called psychic gift. Almost a full year had passed. She’d started to think she would be normal again.

But a brand-new dream reminded her she would always be different.

Heading toward the street, she picked up her steps. Don’t look back. You’ve done enough damage.

“Miss! Hey, wait up!”

“Damn.” She slowed her feet. No point in trying to run. She’d look guilty of something then the cops would have a reason to haul her off the school campus in cuffs.

Turning, she came face-to-face with the striking plain-clothes cop. “I’m Detective Cordell with Austin Police.” He stood at least six inches taller than she, his jet-black hair sheared in a standard cut for police. The bulk of his chest stretched the material of his short-sleeved dress shirt. With dark eyes and sexy confidence, he was all sorts of captivating. If he hadn’t been such a threat to her freedom, she might even have called him handsome. “Do you have a minute? I’d like to ask you some questions.”

There died his charm.

Get to Know the heroine of Broken Road by @AlexaBourne @DecadentPub

Guest Post by Alexa Bourne

The heroine in Broken Road, Catriona, has a lot of me in her. As a writer, how can I not put some of myself into the main female character? Of course, there are a lot of differences between us, too, but I’m pretty sure those are minor.

Catriona works in a school as a teacher's assistant and she spends her days with young children. I'm a middle school English teacher. Because I'm comfortable talking and writing about educational settings, it was easy for me to decide Cat would work in a school.

She loves her quiet, quaint Highland community. I've always wanted to live in the type of community I've created with my Highland books. Cat's friendships and relationships are what I wish for my own life.

Yes, she enjoys living far from the city with a slower pace, but she does long for adventure, too. She's a bit timid and she's not sure if the city life or traveling is for her, but when she gets the chance to move in Broken Road she takes it. I love to travel and have adventures inside my country as well as out in the rest of the world. I can say that I am a lot more adventurous than Cat. She lets fear dictate her life in some ways. I do not. I may still have worries, but I refuse to be held down by them.

Cat, in the beginning of the story, is a lost soul. By the end of the book, after taking chances she never expected, she knows exactly what she wants and needs and she's not interested in settling for less. I was a lost soul for many years, but after many challenges and chances, I am the woman I want to be. I know what I want for my life and I am not willing to settle either. Now, Cat does get the hot and sexy Ian MacKenzie in her life and her bed, and I'm still searching for my own soulmate, but I'm holding out hope that will eventually be another similarity between us!

Catriona MacGregor leads a quiet life, working in the local school of Glenhalish, Scotland and spending time with close friends. She’s content to sit back and be an observer of the life around her. But all that changes when a recently deceased family friend leaves her a flat in Edinburgh and challenges her to spread her wings.

With his work as an international bodyguard, Ian MacKenzie has no time for a serious, committed relationship. Yet when he comes home to Glenhalish for a visit and to clear his mind, he is drawn to down-to-earth Cat. The more time they spend together, the more he wants her.

Though they agreed to a friends-with-benefits arrangement, Cat soon discovers exactly what she wants for herself and it involves all of Ian—body, mind and soul. Their connection ambushes Ian. He’s not ready for the intensity they share.

Can this Highland lassie steer her lad back onto the right path to a love that will last a lifetime?

Excerpt:
Cat sat at one of the foldaway tables and sipped her wine. A pleasant breeze rolled off the loch and made the candlelight shimmer. So much laughter and chatter whooshed round her, and again her heart hung heavy. Could she give up all she had here for a new life in Edinburgh? Did she have the courage to try? What if Fiona had been wrong in her will and given Cat more credit than she truly deserved?

Ian marched toward her, pulled her glass from her hand, and set it on the table. “Come.” With a firm but gentle grip, he tugged her out of the chair.

Where?”

“I need you to save me.” He whirled her round and pulled her close to his hard-muscled body. She pressed her palms to his chest. The heat under her fingers shot straight into her center. He wrapped his arms round her waist and eased them onto the dance floor in time to the slow rhythm of the music.

Cat laughed. “You, a big, braw lad, need me, a wee lass, to rescue you? I find that hard to believe.” But, she was ever so grateful for whatever sent him to her. They’d always been friendly with each other, sort of like her relationship with Ewan, except…not.

He spun her round so she could see the other side of the dance floor. “See those lasses flirting with the MacDougall brothers?”

Women with tight clothes and high-pitched laughs dangled over the makeshift bar. “What about them?”

“Two of them are trying to lay claim to me.”

“And?”

“I don’t do romantic relationships.”

“What?” Handsome, smart, strong. He had it all.

Liar, Liar Blog Tour Day 4 @AlexaBourne @DecadentPub

Guest post by Alexa Bourne

Thank you to Sara for inviting me for a visit! While I’m here can I introduce you to the Cooper brothers, Grady and Scott? They both have the same father. There are only a few years between them. They both played sports as kids and both have gone into some type of law enforcement. With all these similarities, you might think these two men were very close. But you know what? They’re not. There is so much angst between them that when they do run into each other, barbed words fly out of their mouths in hopes of stabbing the heart of the other. Yeah, absolutely no love here.

Grady was the first one to become a character in my book, LIAR, LIAR. He charged right toward me and demanded I share his story. Sometimes he was sweet and charming and sometimes he shoved right through my brain to get his way. I have to admit writing his story was a wild ride and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.

But as I put LIAR, LIAR together, Scott quietly urged me to include him. As I wrote the necessary scenes with both brothers, Scott kept suggesting where to take his secondary character storyline. Then, when the book was already in edits, he convinced me how wonderful of a character he is and how he deserves his own happily-ever-after story.

Grady, I’m pretty sure, isn’t too thrilled with this idea, but his vicious attitude toward his brother dulled (a teeny, tiny bit) through LIAR, LIAR. He’s willing to give his consent to me uncovering Scott’s story just as long as he doesn’t have to take part in it. But I have a few plot tricks in my author bag and I plan to use every one. The tension between the brothers can still be explosive and I really, really want to play with fire!

Blurb:
Unable to protect her mother from her father as a child, Devin McQueen has made it her mission as an adult to protect as many abused women and children as she can. The rare moments she’s not consumed with work as a victims’ advocate, she limits her involvements to safe, predictable men….until she meets bounty hunter Grady Cooper. He is big, bold, brash, and has no problem speaking his mind.

Growing up in a broken home, Grady realized early on that good deeds had a price.  To survive, he learned to weigh every decision by what he could gain. Unfortunately, the successful, solitary life he’s worked so hard to create spins out of control when demons from his past shake his confidence. His boss has given him one last chance—bring in Devin’s latest client quickly, and quietly and maybe he’ll still have a job. It didn’t sound unreasonable until he met Devin.
Suddenly, Grady must make a decision: save his career or follow his heart?

Today is DAY 4 of my LIAR, LIAR Blog Tour! Come follow me on this path, tweet about the tour and share the details on Facebook. For each comment you make (or tweet or Facebook post) along the way, you’ll move closer to winning one of three great prizes!

Excerpt:
If Grady Cooper had any hope of salvaging his professional reputation, he needed to charm Devin McQueen into giving him what she’d never given any other man.
He tucked his keys into his cargo shorts, stared up at the five-story office building and cursed the humidity.
And his dilemma.
Needing anyone was bad enough. Being forced to rely on a complete stranger to help prove he wasn’t a menace to society was as appealing as the Red Sox using his head for batting practice. If she refused to help him, he’d lose his job for sure.
“That’s not going to happen,” he whispered. He’d do whatever he had to, promise her the world even, to get himself out of this mess and restore his reputation. By the time she realized he had no intention of honoring his pledge, he’d be a free man and he could get back to chasing the bad guys instead of being labeled one.
Whatever it took.
He pushed the glass door open and flew up the stairs two at a time to the third floor. As he walked down the hallway, he glanced at the business names on the doors: law offices, non-profit offices, save the bleeding heart offices. Rooms of people he’d probably chased a bail jumper for at one time or another.
Loud thumps filtered into the hallway from somewhere up ahead.
The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. Trade rule number one: Always expect the worst. Still, the noises could have been any number of things: a fallen chair, a muffled voicemail message, boxes of printer paper being dropped. It could have been nothing connected to this woman.
As he got closer to the door with Soul Survivors carved on it, the name of McQueen’s business, the noises got louder. Glass shattered. A series of thumps passed from behind the door. A woman’s voice flew through the walls like a high-pitched war cry.
What if someone wanted Devin McQueen even more than Grady did?
Too bad. He had to put his own needs first.
Adrenaline pushed him. He turned the doorknob.
Damn it. Locked.
He shoved his shoulder against the wooden door. It budged. Barely. Inside, more glass broke. A male voice growled through a string of swear words.
Whoever stood on the other side of this door could not have her.
Grady gritted his teeth and jammed his shoulder against the door again. This time, it flew open and hurled him into the office.
Silence reigned across the room. With his shoulder throbbing, he scanned the scene. One upended chair, one thug cradling his nuts, the other, older one, bleeding from his nose and one wild-eyed woman in the center of it all. The bleeding man had his arms wrapped around the woman’s chest, crushing her…assets under his forearms.
Grady bit back a grin. If this was Devin McQueen, then some of the rumors were true. She could hold her own. But now she didn’t need to. “What’s the matter, guys? Couldn’t find anyone your own size to pick on?”

New Release from @AlexaBourne and @DecadentPub #romanticsuspense

Guest Post
by Alexa Bourne

Happy New Year! I hope your celebration was happy and uneventful. I took it easy. Yesterday I had dinner with family and I said goodbye to my old lifestyle of eating what I want, how much I want, when I want. I’m like a kazillion other people who plan to “diet” as part of my New Year’s Resolutions. I, unlike so many others however, will succeed. Why? Because when I set my mind to something I make it happen. In the end, I know I’ll be healthier and happier with a better approach to eating and exercising.

The heroine of my new book, LIAR, LIAR, is a lot like me. Devin sets her mind to something and she makes sure it gets done. Sometimes she gets a one-track mind about it, which can cause trouble for her, but in the end she meets her goal. In the long run that is extremely important since she works with and for abused women and children.

The hero of the book is not like either of us. Grady is very laid back, very much the one to “see how things go” before he makes any type of decision. Yes, he does follow through with his work, which is good since he’s a bounty hunter, but outside of his job Grady doesn’t really make plans or goals that far out. (Unless it’s getting to a Red Sox baseball game. He’s fanatical about his favorite team.)

So, what about you? Do you make resolutions? If you do, do you stick to them? Or are you the type to say, “What’s the point?” since so many people “fall off the wagon” before February is over? Whatever you do, Devin, Grady and I wish you a Happy 2014!
